About The Internationals
by Robin Van Arsdol
What is the significance of location to an artist’s identity? Is his or her environment that important to what an artist makes? Gallery at Avalon Island is pleased to present an exhibition by 6 living artists, all born in different countries and living in various locations, entitled The Internationals. Can there be a relationship to their differences? Maybe, maybe not.
For this exhibition, the connection is Orlando based artist/curator Robin Van Arsdol. Whether it is exhibiting in Colon, Germany with Nigerian born Chidi Kwubiri or at the Castello dell’Aquila in Northern Italy with the beautiful, Russian born Ekatherina Savtchenko, while in Europe International contacts are always possibilities. “Ah, but didn’t Buggiani live in New York City in the 1980’s?” states curator Robin Van Arsdol. “We know that Ekatherina now has a studio in Manhattan and didn’t Ken Hiratsuka have a studio in the East Village? Didn’t Eyfells once live in New York City as well? No way! But it’s true.”
